video game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WildI’m buying a Nintendo Switch for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild — and I’d hazard a guess that I’m not alone. Sure, the long-awaited adventure game is also available for the Wii U at the sunset of that system, but performance will be better on the new hardware — and I’m excited for a new beginning rather than a bittersweet end.

What video game made you fall head over heels and pony up for a whole new hardware system?

2nd generation

The Atari 2600, for me, meant Pac-Man (the disappointing, blocky version) but also The Empire Strikes Back. For that, I have to thank my late spinster aunt who couldn’t abide seeing me upstaged by my other aunt’s children.

3rd generation

The original Nintendo Entertainment System? Super Mario Bros. Duh.

We got a Sega Master System pretty much for Penguin Land for my mom for some reason, but I quickly fell in love with that title’s robust level-building tools, which were years ahead of their time. Super Mario Maker it wasn’t, but I still pine for it from time to time.

4th generation

Before Sonic the Hedgehog arrived, Sega’s Genesis came to us mainly to keep up with those cousins, again. It came with Altered Beast (whatever).

Super NES: Super Mario World was what it was all about. But I was really just killing time waiting for The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Metroid.

5th generation

I bought the original PlayStation for Final Fantasy VII. Until this point, Square Enix’s seminal RPG was a Nintendo exclusive, but that’s another story.

N64: Super Mario 64, naturally. The need to play the iconic plumber’s first 3-D adventure right away was a visceral one, and it’s a game I revisit often on the Virtual Console. It’s the first game I remember playing where I was struck by a feeling of a continuous world that was still there when I switched off the power — but not in a creepy way.

6th generation

GameCube? Uh … Luigi’s Mansion for sure, but there was also a little game called Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader. Oh, yeah …

I bought a PS2 just because it was the thing to do, and it was my first DVD player; it was stolen before I could make much use of it either way.

The original Xbox made its way into my home with a little game called Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. (Meatbags!)

7th generation

We skipped the Xbox 360, and PS3 was an eventual thrift-store purchase for my spawn’s increasing interest in the Madden series and stealth combat games. Not really my thing …

But Wii Sports was all the rage, of course, and was a must-have in our house as with so many others.

8th generation

We haven’t gone for the PS4 yet, but Santa brought an Xbox One late in its life cycle with Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, a favorite of the next generation in my household. The Wii U brought initial thrills with Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two and New Super Mario Bros. U; though it was packaged with Nintendo Land, that just wasn’t enough. Derided by many for low sales, we found plenty on the system to keep us engaged for years. Later, Splatoon would more than justify the system’s purchase for us.

Handheld

Nintendo’s Game Boy was all about Tetris. Let’s call that Russia’s original electronic meddling …

The Nintendo 3DS made its way into our lives due to the Mario Kart series, as did the DS/DSi; at one point, each of the four people in my household had their own, and we linked up frequently for download play. I personally upgraded to 3DS mainly for The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

Your turn!

Enough about my problem! What game made you go out and buy a new video game console? What kept you coming back for more?

The DM resource Monster Manual is not scheduled for release until Feb. 18, 2025.

The Vecna: Eve of Ruin adventure campaign is set for a May 21, 2024, release, with the adventure anthology Quests from the Infinite Staircase coming July 16, 2024.

It’s about more than just new adventures, retrospectives and Dungeons & Dragons core rulebooks. Brand collaborations with Converse footwear and apparel, a LEGO building set with minifigures and Pop-Tarts treats are also in the 50th anniversary consumer licensing pipeline.

The year-long celebration kicks off in March 2024, when fans all over the world will be able to play the same adventure together inspired by the Dungeons & Dragons creators’ love of tournament-style play. Fans can experience an excerpt from an upcoming release, Descent into the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, in game stores, at community centers, libraries, conventions like Gary Con and PAX East, on kitchen tables and painted scenery, in video chat rooms, and on D&D Beyond. Dungeon Masters will be available wherever fans want to play.

“D&D has a rich history, an exciting present, and a great future,” said Kyle Brink, executive producer of the team making D&D at Wizards of the Coast. “This year we’ll be celebrating all three with the 50th Anniversary of the first publication of Dungeons & Dragons. We’ll take you through the making of the game, bring some of the classic adventures to today’s play, visit the most iconic settings in the D&D multiverse, and kick off the future of the game with the new 2024 core rulebooks that are the heart of the game. We’ve been building up to this for a while now. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

An earlier version of this update incorrectly listed the Dungeon Master’s Guide release date as Sept. 17, 2024.

Wizards of the Coast announces dates for major 2024 D&D releases – then backtracks with “Coming Soon”

Wizards of the Coast on Dec. 1, 2023, announced release dates for the updated 2024 versions of the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game’s Core Rulebooks — Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide and Monster Manual. Then, it deleted those social media graphics and replaced all dates with “coming soon.” It also changed the graphic to replace Core Rulebooks with simply Player’s Handbook.

The company also said the same day as the release of the Core Rulebook(s) would bring the release of the scenario Vecna: Eve of Ruin, “a multiverse spanning adventure which goes up to level 20 and features cameos from famous D&D characters.” A Vecna module was announced earlier this year, but now we know the full title. This date, like the Core Rulebook(s?), was later replaced with “coming soon.”

A representative for the company said “the product release dates that were published in error and are actually not correct,” and that specific release dates will be announced “later” but in 2024.

WotC had also said a D&D “making of” book that includes the 50-year-old RPG’s original rules set, and a new adventure collection, Quests From the Infinite Staircase, would follow. Those announcement posts, also — you guessed it — now just say “coming soon.”

The Hasbro subsidiary has said the 2024 update would complement rather than replace the existing 5th Edition of the fantasy tabletop game, which itself turns 10 in 2024.

This post was updated to reflect the apparent retraction of 2024 release dates posted earlier in the day by the Dungeons & Dragons social media team. The dates were removed at the company’s request because they said they are not correct.

Update! D&D creative team addresses erroneous release dates …

A new video from the D&D creative team addresses last year’s “erroneous” release of a May timeframe for the release of the next edition of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying game.

“We realize there was an erroneous release date published with regards to the 2024 players handbook. that was definitely incorrect. The Player’s Handbook is NOT releasing in May. (but it will be coming this year) Stay tuned for an official announcement soon…”

Goth Opera

A Goth Opera for the Fifth Doctor …

Goth Opera

The last time Big Finish Productions adapted one of the Virgin New Adventures or Missing Adventures novels, Peter Capaldi was still the Doctor!

But now it’s time for Paul Cornell’s bloody tale of vampires, Goth Opera (originally published in 1994), to get the full-cast audio treatment, with Peter Davison, Janet Fielding and Sarah Sutton reprising their original roles as the Fifth Doctor, Tegan and Nyssa.

Get your crosses, garlic, and parkas ready – vampires come to Manchester in a brand-new full-cast audio adaptation of Paul Cornell’s 1994 novel Goth Opera, due for release in July 2024.

The fan-favourite Doctor Who book, from the Virgin Missing Adventures range, has been adapted by Lizbeth Myles into a three-part audio play starring Peter Davison as the Doctor, Janet Fielding as Tegan and Sarah Sutton as Nyssa.

Sarah Sutton, Peter Davison, Janet Fielding
Sarah Sutton, Peter Davison, Janet Fielding

Manchester, 1993.The Time Lady Ruath, an old friend of the Doctor’s, arrives on the planet to inform Earth’s vampires that the arrival of their legendary messiah is imminent. His rising will herald an age of endless night where the undead reign supreme. All that is needed is the blood of a Time Lord.

In Tasmania, the Doctor, Tegan, and Nyssa are enjoying the sun and plenty of cricket. When they are attacked by vampires, they escape unscathed, except for Nyssa who suffers two small puncture wounds to her neck. Compelled by her attacker to remain silent, she can tell no-one what she’s turning into.

Why is Ruath so determined to see the descendants of the Great Vampire rise to power? If only the Doctor knew the truth, she’s certain he would turn to her side, and help to secure the future of Vampire kind, no matter how much humanity must suffer.

Goth Opera‘s guest cast includes Richard Armitage (The Hobbit, Fool Me Once), who reads the prologue as Rassilon, plus Natalie Gumede (Titans, Jekyll and Hyde) as Ruath and Micah Balfour (The Gold, The Bill) as Yarven.

Doctor Who – The Novel Adaptations: Goth Opera is now available to pre-order as a 3-disc collector’s edition box set (for just £22.99) or as a digital download only (for just £18.99).

Producer and director David O’Mahony said: “Goth Opera has got everything: vampires, superpowers, blood, guts, and gore, and of course Peter Davison’s Doctor along with Tegan and Nyssa. It’s also set in and around Manchester, which gave us a lovely opportunity to bring in young and exciting northern actors.

“Lizbeth Myles has brilliantly adapted Paul Cornell’s novel and, with an incredible voice cast –including the wonderful Richard Armitage giving us a Rassilon prologue – it’s a vampiric romp through the Whoniverse not to be missed!”

Christen Bejar’s most anticipated video games of 2024

Tekken 8

Jan. 25, 2024, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC

I have been a longtime fan of the Tekken series for awhile. With each entry it really seems to ramp up the quality (we don’t talk about Tekken 4 though), with the seventh one being critically acclaimed for its fast-paced combat and variety of characters. Tekken 8 will continue the wonderfully nonsensical storyline of the bloodthirsty Mishimas but scatter in a slew of new and returning characters in the roster for the next King of Iron Fist tournament. After such a strong entry, it will be interesting to see the incorporation of the new Heat system and how it will shape competitive play this year.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Banishers: Ghost of New Eden

Feb. 13, 2024. PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC

I am a sucker for a thrilling story and Banishers looks to be one. From the acclaimed studio Don’t Nod (Life is Strange), Banishers: Ghost of New Eden is about two fated lovers that work together to put an end to a malevolent curse (along with all the spirit creatures that come with it). The world looks beautiful and the duality between the real and the spirit realm is very interesting to me. Add in the romantic plot hook of the characters finally reuniting, either in death or life, has me ready to play. This will also be a big changeup gameplay wise from their more recent offerings, so I’m excited to see where they go with this new IP.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II

2024, PC and Xbox Series X|S

If you missed the first entry into the BAFTA-winning Hellblade series, you’re seriously missing out. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice told a gripping and unsettling tale about a Pict warrior woman fighting for her love’s soul while battling all manner of the underworld, as well as her own mental illness. Featuring a focus on psychosis as it was understood in early civilizations, it led players through puzzles and combat using interesting mechanics outside the norm for games at the time. The first game was an incredible and still unmatched experience, so the next entry does have a little pressure to deliver the same unique storytelling that made it so poignant from other titles in 2017. Grab a pair of good headphones and hunker down for this one when it releases.

Hades II

Early access Q2 2024, PC

I will go ahead and admit it: Hades made me finally fall in love with roguelikes. Prior to this game, the thought of playing tireless loops with minimal payoff irked me. I couldn’t see the point. Then Supergiant Games threw Hades in front of me with its charming characters, gorgeous art, beautiful soundtrack, and satisfying combat with a compelling story. Yes it may only be early access, but I’m excited and grateful to dive into more content from the Hades lore.

Wolf Among Us II

2024? PC

This is a wishful thinking entry. The ups and downs of TellTale Games have been well reported by now, but a surprise announcement for a sequel to one of my personal favorites in their library, The Wolf Among Us, excited me. Much like The Walking Dead TellTale games, the Fables comics lent itself well to the detective mystery players navigated Bigby Wolf through. Unfortunately, the development team was hit with layoffs in October of 2023, resulting in the delay of the game to the ambiguous date of 2024. It would be a shame if this game ended up shelved forever after its death and rebirth, but it’s a reminder that the industry sorely needs a reduction in volatility to make it a more stable place of employment for hardworking development groups.

Support a pair of badass lovers as they follow through their oath on protecting the living from the dead, until death seizes one of them and complicates their lives.

Game details: Hunt ghosts as two memorable characters in a story driven Action-RPG where your decisions have dramatic consequences. Solve haunting cases and battle supernatural forces combining Antea’s spiritual powers and Red’s arsenal.

The Thaumaturge

The Thaumaturge

Planned release: Feb. 20, 2024

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1684350/The_Thaumaturge/

Another game I stole from Shia’s wishlist. Be a thaumaturge descended from a long-ling of wielders with a terrible power that can control creatures from another realm. The game has gorgeous isometric scenery, and your choices affect the story. Vampyr… Dishonored… give me a dark industrialised world with Victorian vibes and dark magic and I’m good to go.

Game details: The Thaumaturge is a story-driven RPG with morally ambiguous choices, taking place in the culturally diverse world of early 20th century Warsaw. In this world, Salutors exist: esoteric beings that only Thaumaturges can truly perceive and use for their needs.

Tiny Glade

Planned release: 2024

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2198150/Tiny_Glade/

Tiny Glade is a super cozy castle landscape “drawing” game. The trailer does the best work in demonstrating how organic their building tools are. You can drag around your cursor and castle towers will sprout, meadows will bloom and a beautiful medieval landscape tapestry will unfold before you. All other details are stripped (no romance, story, etc.) … just relax and enjoy the unlimited sculpting in Tiny Glade.

Game details: Tiny Glade is a small relaxing game about doodling castles. Explore gridless building chemistry, and watch the game carefully assemble every brick, pebble and plank. There’s no management, combat, or wrong answers – just kick back and turn forgotten meadows into lovable dioramas.

Tales of Seikyu

Tales of Seikyu

Planned release: December 2024

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2340520/Tales_of_Seikyu/

Tales of Seikyu is actually in the middle of their Kickstarter right now. If you’re burned out on life-sim RPGs, this game hopes to stand out by having a unique world with mystical Japanese-folklore yokai. The character art is gorgeous, especially the yokai designs! I’m really hoping their campaign goes above and beyond with funding.

Game details: Embark on Seikyu, a fantasy farming adventure amidst yokai legends. Can you restore a countryside inn to its former glory, forge connections with extraordinary characters, and uncover the hidden wonders of this magical world?

Moonlit Peaks

Moonlit Peaks

Planned release: Early 2024

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2209900/Moonlight_Peaks/

It’s Stardew Valley, but you’re a vampire! Farm, craft spells, unravel mysteries and date other supernatural beings in this cozy game. The art is incredibly charming and hits that nice balance between pixel art farm sims and 3D isometric.

Game details: Experience life as a vampire in Moonlight Peaks! Master the art of potion-making and spell-casting, tend to your supernatural farm, and make your mark on the magical town. Befriend the local werewolves, witches and mermaids, and maybe even find eternal love along the way.

Mario versus Donkey Kong

David Buck’s most anticipated video games of 2024

When it comes to gaming, 2024 is, surprisingly, not a big anticipation year for me. Despite that, there are still some titles I’m looking forward to year.

Two of them are on the Evercade. Over the past few years, I’ve been collecting (and playing) games for the Evercade. This year, they’re releasing a multi game cart called Indie Heroes 3 that will contain some of the best and most interesting indie/homebrew games I’ve ever played (including Donut Dodo, an arcade platformer that just rocks). That — along with the C64 Collection 3 — come out in February.

For the Nintendo Switch, I’m looking forward to the re-release of Rocket Knight Adventures and plan to check out Mario vs Donkey Kong.

Other than that, I’m keeping an eye on the NES homebrew scene and might try my hand at making my own game.

David Buck is an author, musician, copywriter, and voice over artist based in Colorado. His work has appeared on Nerdvana Media, The Nintendo Times, Star Trek.com, EN World, SyFy Wire and across the web. In his spare time, he composes music, writes science fiction, and paints miniatures.

Mina the Hollower
Mina the Hollower (Yacht Club Games)

Jayson Peters’ most anticipated video games of 2024

Mina the Hollower

2024

For their next trick, Yacht Club Games is leaving the shovel and armor behind and trading it for a burrowing rodent hero — with a whip. The Shovel Knight developers’ new game, Mina the Hollower, hearkens back to the 8-bit Game Boy Color era for its aesthetics, but this top-down adventure also takes cues from elements of Castlevania, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and Bloodborne. I can dig it! Look for this one to launch on Windows PC, Linux and Mac sometime this year, after a late 2023 release fizzled. (And keep your fingers crossed for a console release.)

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Feb. 29, PS5

Contra: Operation Galuga

Early 2024, Nintendo Switch, PC (Steam), PS4 and Xbox One

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD

Summer, Nintendo Switch

A visually enhanced version of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, originally released on Nintendo 3DS, is coming to Switch soon.

Star Wars Outlaws

Get set to experience open-world adventure to the gritty underworld of A Galaxy Far, Far Away in 2024.

Future of the Nintendo Switch …

And last but not least, the Nintendo Switch’s successor system is expected to be revealed (and released?) this year. But Professor Layton and the New World of Steam apparently won’t see release on the Switch until 2025 …

Born and raised in Phoenix, Jayson Peters is a southern Colorado-based newspaper copy editor and website designer. The Mandalorian and Grogu are embarking on a new adventure — to movie theaters.

Directed by Jon Favreau, and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni, The Mandalorian & Grogu will go into production in 2024.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” said Favreau. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen,” added Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm.

The Mandalorian & Grogu will lead Lucasfilm’s ongoing feature-development slate, including films helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni, who is also currently developing Ahsoka Season 2, among those in the works.

Lucasfilm on Wednesday teased “The story continues” for the Ahsoka live-action series, with a sketch from Filoni depicting the Jedi Ahsoka Tano and her apprentice Sabine Wren on the same gargantuan Mortis god statue that the first season finale revealed on the extra-galactic planet Peridea — upon which perched the Dark Jedi Lord Baylan Skoll, played by the now-sadly deceased actor Ray Stevenson.
