When James Gunn was fired as writer-director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 over past controversial comments, many Marvel fans were outraged and wanted their icon back. They took to Twitter, Facebook and even petitions to try and get Gunn rehired. #RehireJamesGunn became a trend on Twitter.
Not only were fans having his back, but his Guardians family had his back and directors from other Marvel movies, such Peyton Reed and Taika Waititi, chimed in.
But Disney stood by their decision to part ways with Gunn. Fans still didn’t want to lose hope, but as news surfaced that Gunn was set to direct DC Comics’ Suicide Squad reboot/sequel, they were starting to wonder whether Gunn going over to DC meant his Marvel ties were done.
The talk of James Gunn and Guardians of The Galaxy was slowly going away, to the point where people didn’t seem to bring him up anymore. Fans still wondered if Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 would still happen, prompting Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige to say during an interview at the Oscars that the movie was still happening.
Finding a director for the film seemed to be hard. Fans still wanted Gunn to direct the movie. Any new director would have big shoes to fill taking over such a role from Gunn.
Everything changed today, when news rang out that Disney had rehired Gunn for the threequel. Fans took to Twitter and Facebook to express their joy. Gunn himself even released a statement:
Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula, tweeted simply: “We Are Groot.”

Peyton Reed, director of Ant-Man and Ant-Man and The Wasp, tweeted his joy: “Welcome Back James.”

This fan’s view:
I’ve been very vocal about my support for James Gunn. I’m proud and happy that Gunn is back where he belongs and where he should have never been fired from in the first place.
Disney did the right thing.
I’m proud to stand behind Gunn as I always have and always will.
