BBC’s ‘Whoniverse’ intro pays homage to all eras of Doctor Who

Tales of the TARDIS is first original Whoniverse series – will it come to U.S.?

For years, once and future (current?) Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies has said he wanted the universe of the long-running British science fiction staple to be treated like Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe or Star Wars Saga. Now, with hundreds of episodes of classic and modern Doctor Who coming to the BBC’s iPlayer Nov. 1, that’s finally happening — at least in the surface marketing.

Check out the official “Whoniverse” ident that will run in the almost all-inclusive new home of Doctor Who for Brits — and, presumably, with the new episodes coming later in November outside the UK on Disney+.

Isn’t it great? All eras represented, with Doctors in the “W,” companions in the “H” (where even spin-off series folk like Torchwood’s Gwen Cooper are represented) and villains literally rounding out the “O.” Doesn’t this Whoniverse intro remind you (hopefully in a good way) of the Marvel Studios reel at the beginning of MCU films and series? That’s obviously what they’re going for.

In addition to the classic and 21st century Doctor Who TV library, with its added accessibility features like subtitles, audio descriptions and sign language enhancements (many for the first time), the Whoniverse concept will include “the first original Whoniverse series,” the six-part Tales of the TARDIS, which brings back classic Doctors and their companions as duos, in character to explore their relationships further. You can read more about that at the official Doctor Who website, but there’s so far no indication whether Tales of the TARDIS will come to areas outside the UK. We can hope!

What do you think of the Whoniverse idea as a whole and, more specifically, its slick new promo reel? I am a bit confused as to why the music in this video is so generic, when there are so many iconic variations on the Doctor Who theme, as well as assorted character and monster themes, old and new.
