On April 8, 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication will end for Nintendo 3DS software (including for New Nintendo 3DS) and Wii U software. This announcement — coming relatively soon after the March 2023 eShop closure for those systems — also affects online co-operative play, internet rankings, and data distribution.

Service for all features of Nintendo Badge Arcade on 3DS will also end April 8 — more information on that can be found here.

“We will announce a specific end date and time at a later date,” Nintendo said of the Wii U and 3DS software online services’ sunsetting.

The April timeline could shift to the left, Nintendo said, ending online software services earlier “if an event occurs that would make it difficult to continue online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software.”

Nintendo’s FAQ reveals more details:

Players will still be able to use features and game modes that do not require online communication.

It will still be possible to use online services for Pokémon Bank “but that may also end at some point in the future.”

“For the foreseeable future, it will still be possible to download update data and redownload purchased software and downloadable content from Nintendo eShop.

“StreetPass, which uses local communication between Nintendo 3DS family systems, will still be available even after online services end. However, because SpotPass uses online communication, SpotPass features will no longer be available.

“For example, you will be able to use StreetPass in StreetPass Mii Plaza, which is pre-installed on Nintendo 3DS family systems, but you will no longer be able to use features that use online communication (such as receiving new panels in Puzzle Swap).”

The legacy of the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo has always been at the forefront of innovative gaming experiences, and two of their most iconic consoles, the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS, have left legacy in the gaming industry. These two consoles not only pushed the boundaries of gaming technology but also introduced unique gameplay features that revolutionized the way we interact with video games. Let’s delve into the legacy of the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, and explore their impact on the gaming world.

The Wii U: A unique console experience

Nintendo Wii U software

Released in 2012, the Wii U was the successor to the wildly popular Wii console. What set the Wii U apart was its innovative GamePad, a controller with a built-in touchscreen that offered a second-screen experience. This second screen allowed for new gaming possibilities, such as asymmetric gameplay, where one player used the GamePad while others used traditional controllers.

Despite initial excitement, the Wii U faced some challenges during its lifespan. One of the main issues was a lack of third-party support, which limited the console’s game library. However, Nintendo’s first-party Wii U software such as Super Mario 3D World, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Mario Kart 8 remain standout titles that showcased the console’s strengths.

The Wii U also laid the groundwork for Nintendo’s future success. The unique gameplay concepts introduced with the GamePad eventually found their way into the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo’s immensely popular hybrid console that combines portable and home gaming. It allowed players to experience gaming on their terms, whether on the go or at home, and its success can be traced back to the innovative ideas explored with the Wii U.

The Nintendo 3DS: Portable gaming reinvented

When it comes to handheld gaming, few consoles have had the impact of the Nintendo 3DS. Launched in 2011, the 3DS offered glasses-free 3D visuals, paving the way for a new level of immersion in portable gaming. The inclusion of a touchscreen and a built-in camera further enhanced the console’s capabilities, allowing for innovative gameplay mechanics.

Nintendo 3DS

The 3DS boasted an impressive library of games that catered to a wide range of players. From beloved Nintendo franchises like Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and The Legend of Zelda to countless third-party releases, there was something for everyone. The console also introduced the StreetPass feature, which allowed players to exchange game data with other 3DS users they encountered in the real world, fostering a unique sense of community.

Despite facing competition from smartphones and tablets, the 3DS remained a dominant force in the handheld gaming market. Its longevity, support from developers, and a constant stream of high-quality games solidified its legacy as one of Nintendo’s most successful portable consoles.

The legacy lives on

Although the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS had their share of challenges, their legacies endure. The Wii U’s pioneering second-screen gameplay and the 3DS’s innovative use of 3D visuals and portable gaming experiences have shaped Nintendo’s future endeavors.

As Nintendo continues to innovate and push the boundaries of gaming, we can’t overlook the lasting impact of the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. These consoles will always be remembered as milestones in gaming history, reminding us of Nintendo’s commitment to delivering unique and memorable gaming experiences.
